Congressman Murphy Statement on New York State Being Race to the Top Finalist
|
Washington, DC –
Today, Congressman Scott Murphy (NY-20) released the following
statement in response to the news that New York State has been named a
finalist for Department of Education Race to the Top funds:
“Our
local schools must receive the resources they need to prepare our
students to compete in the global economy. The Race to the Top program
would provide funds which are desperately needed by local schools to
purchase materials, provide training to teachers, and develop new
educational initiatives. The students of today are the workforce of
tomorrow, we must do everything we can to invest in the future by
investing in our children. I will continue to fight for our future by
working with my colleagues in the New York Congressional delegation to
ensure Upstate New York gets its fair share.”
According to the Department of Education, Race to the Top funds can be used in four specific areas:
-
Adopting standards and assessments that prepare students to succeed in college and the workplace and to compete in the global economy;
-
Building data systems that measure student growth and success, and inform teachers and principals about how they can improve instruction;
-
Recruiting, developing, rewarding, and retaining effective teachers and principals, especially where they are needed most; and
-
Turning around our lowest-achieving schools.
